  11. Auburn drops one place in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll Taylor Jones Mon, February 12, 2024 at 12:31 PM CST·2 min read Auburn basketball experienced the ebbs and flows of life in the SEC last week. The Tigers opened the week by blowing out rival Alabama by 18 points on Wednesday at home before experiencing a trap game in Gainesville on Saturday, losing 81-65 to Florida. The uneven week has caused Auburn to take a slight hit in the latest rankings. The updated USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll was released Monday, and the Tigers have fallen to No. 12, down one spot from a week ago. This week’s slate will provide a challenge to Auburn, as they will face two teams in the top 25 at home. The week begins Wednesday as the hottest team in the SEC, South Carolina, pays a visit to the Plains. The Gamecocks jump nine spots to No. 11 after taking care of Ole Miss and Vanderbilt at home. Kentucky, which visits Auburn on Saturday, fell to No. 20 after suffering its fourth loss over its last six games on Saturday to Gonzaga. Five SEC schools are in this week’s coaches poll. Joining the aforementioned programs are Tennessee at No. 9 and Alabama at No. 15. 12. Tale of the Tape: Comparing Auburn and South Carolina ahead of Wednesday’s showdown at Neville Arena Taylor Jones Tue, February 13, 2024 at 10:00 AM CST·2 min read The No. 12 Auburn Tigers host No. 11 South Carolina on Wednesday in what will be its most notable home game of the season. The Tigers still have dreams of winning the SEC, and their performances in the upcoming stretch of games featuring South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi State over its next five games will determine if they are indeed the kings of the conference. The first game in the stretch will be a home tilt with South Carolina, winners of seven straight games and the current leaders of the SEC standings. The Gamecocks are a team that enjoys getting ahead quickly and will look to quiet a rowdy crowd inside Neville Arena from the beginning. Can Auburn keep its unbeaten home winning streak alive on Wednesday against a challenging opponent in South Carolina? Here’s a look at how the teams compare heading into this pivotal SEC matchup. Rankings comparison Matt Pendleton-USA TODAY Sports AUBURN SOUTH CAROLINA 19-5 (8-3) Record (SEC) 21-3 (9-2) No. 12 Coaches Poll No. 11 No. 13 AP Poll No. 11 No. 3 SEC No. 1 No. 7 NET No. 45 No. 5 KenPom No. 45 No. 7 ESPN BPI No. 48 Stats comparison Zach Bland/Auburn Tigers AUBURN SOUTH CAROLINA 82.3 Points per game 72.6 67.1 Points allowed per game 64.0 39.3 Rebounds per game 36.1 17.8 Assists per game 15.7 Johni Broome (16.0) Leading scorer Meechie Johnson (14.1) Johni Broome (8.8) Leading rebounder BJ Mack (5.1) Tre Donaldson (3.5) Leading assists Ta’Lon Cooper (4.4) Record comparison James Gilbert/Getty Images AUBURN SOUTH CAROLINA 2-4 Quad 1 3-2 6-1 Quad 2 5-0 6-0 Quad 3 4-1 5-0 Quad 4 8-0 12-0 Home record 13-1 7-5 Away/Neutral record 8-2 Alabama (No. 5 in NET) Best win Tennessee (No. 6 in NET) Final analysis Matt Pendleton-USA TODAY Sports It is not a stretch to say that Wednesday’s game will be the most challenging home game on Auburn’s schedule to date, and a win will boost its resume and earn them respect. Since taking a 74-47 loss to Alabama on Jan. 9, the Gamecocks have won four SEC games on the road, including a 63-59 win over Tennessee. On paper, Auburn should win this game. But it can not let itself get too comfortable or South Carolina could embarrass them. Auburn needs to avoid another Florida situation and find ways to get more people involved in the stat sheet. The more, the better. Story originally appeared on Auburn Wire
  13. Auburn softball slips in USA TODAY/NFCA top 25 coaches poll after opening weekend Taylor Jones Tue, February 13, 2024 at 3:00 PM CST·3 min read The Auburn Tigers did not have ample opportunity to prove themselves last weekend during the Tiger Invitational due to rain delays altering their schedule. The Tigers played just three games as the remaining two games on the slate were canceled due to heavy rain in the area. Auburn dropped its first game to Virginia Tech and tied the Hokies one day later while earning a win over Belmont to begin the season with a 1-1-1 record. Because of the tough weekend, the Tigers experienced a drop in the latest USA TODAY/NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll heading into week two of the season. Auburn checks in at No. 25 this week, down six spots from its preseason ranking of No. 19. Auburn is one of 10 SEC representatives in the top 25 this week. Tennessee is the highest-ranked team at No. 2, followed by Georgia at No. 4. Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas remain in the top 15 while South Carolina cracks the top 20. Kentucky and Missouri are two of the biggest movers this week. The No. 14 Tigers enter the top 25 after knocking off No. 8 Clemson and No. 13 Utah in Clearwater last weekend. Kentucky jumped seven places from No. 25 to No. 18 after beating then-No. 4 Stanford twice in San Diego. Virginia Tech, who went 1-0-1 over Auburn last weekend, enters the poll at No. 21 this week. Auburn heads to Mexico this weekend to participate in the Puerto Vallarta Challenge beginning Thursday. While there, Auburn will see No. 8 Clemson and No. 13 Utah. 15. al.com Auburn to pay new defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin $1.2 million salary Updated: Feb. 13, 2024, 10:03 p.m.|Published: Feb. 13, 2024, 9:32 p.m. 3–4 minutes Texas A&M Aggies defensive coordinator DJ Durkin yells at a player during a college football game against the South Carolina Gamecocks on October 22, 2022 at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Auburn will pay new defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin a $1.2 million salary for his first season with the Tigers, according to a copy of his contract acquired by AL.com via public records request. The three-year contract includes raises that could bring his total compensation to $1.6 million by the 2026 season. According to the USA Today coaches salary database, Durkin was paid $1.6 million by Texas A&M in 2023. The contract includes a full buy-out clause should Durkin be fired, as well as a mitigation clause that states should Durkin acquire a new coaching job during a period of time defined at the time of his departure, the amount he is paid during that time at the new job is taken out of the total amount Auburn owes him. If Durkin leaves for another coaching job before Dec. 20, 2024, he will owe Auburn $500,000. If he left for another job before Dec. 20, 2025, he would owe $250,000 and if he left before Auburn’s final regular season game of the 2026 season or SEC championship game, he would owe $125,000. But should Durkin leave Auburn for an FBS head coaching job or any job in the NFL, he would not owe anything back to Auburn. Durkin’s contract includes a bonus structure identical to Auburn’s other assistant coaches. Auburn officially announced Durkin’s hire on Jan. 31, after head coach Hugh Freeze confirmed the hire during a press conference at the Senior Bowl. There Freeze explained why he hired the former Texas A&M defensive coordinator. “Truthfully, like I said earlier, we really felt comfortable with he and Sarah as people and that they fit with our culture, Freeze said. “I loved his passion and his drive. I think our practices will look quite different with him because I’ve watched some of his practice tape. He’s pretty into it and energetic. And I love that about him.” Durkin was the head coach at Maryland from 2016-2018. He was fired after an investigation into the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair and the culture within the program Durkin oversaw. A widely criticized internal Maryland investigation found several wrongdoings within the program but deemed it short of the “definition of toxic.” Durkin has held two SEC jobs since his firing at Maryland, as the defensive coordinator at both Ole Miss and Texas A&M. Durkin is the defensive coordinator at Auburn alongside co-defensive coordinator Charles Kelly. Durkin is also in charge of Auburn’s linebackers. Matt Cohen covers Auburn sports for AL.com.
